We will forget how cold the winter was, how grey we looked and how much we preferred to watch a film alone instead of socialize. We will convince our gold-fish-weather-memory that winter never happens and summer will last forever. We will adapt the sunny mood which we so often connect with people in southern countries.

This is for me typically Swedish, Scandinavian and we could even have this short-time memory loss in common with other northerners. But we are the changes of the weather. And I believe it shows more clearly on us, who live in constant transformation, from one extreme to another.

So Spring, dear readers, is the height of the Swedish common mood. If you ever plan on visiting our corner of the world, do it just when the coltsfoot blossom, when the birds return and the Swedes are the most optimistic people in the world!

When Chinese move to Sweden, they starts to drink coffee too, I mean real coffee. Well, Coffee is bitter yes. The Swedes drink it to get a caffeine kick. The Chinese have a slightly different approach to motivate the drinking. They say, “life is bitter. But if you can’t even stand the bitterness of coffee, how can you stand the bitterness of life?”

Personally I am not a big fan of coffee and I unfortunately belong to the group who can’t stand the bitterness of life. I really enjoy the way the Chinese make their tea though. It’s said that what teapot you use and how you use it to boil the water has a big impact on the taste and flavor of the tea. It’s also said that the best tea is made with a peaceful state of mind, and you should never ever under any circumstances stress it by letting the water boil as quickly as possible. Finally, there is tea and tea. Most famous are Green Tea, Oolong Tea, Black Tea and Pu-erh Tea. And even within the same category the prices can still vary, hugely. Well, this part a puzzle. When you look at two samples of seemingly the same greenish dried dull-looking leaves, one priced at millions of kronor a kilo, the other at only a hundred, it’s really hard to know what to think…

But if you choose the more expensive one, you can at least be very satisfied with the fact that you are a man/woman of culture and bought a truly great-looking package of tea.

Well, it’s a complicated business of making tea. Maybe it’s just much more easier to stick with the tea-bags.

So, if you are going to Shanghai during the EXPO, pay some attention to the tea exhibition at the Chinese Pavilion, now that you know a bit more about it!

I really never tought about it, our way of standing in proper lines. Not until the other day when I went to catch the bus to KTH. As I walked to the bus stop I noticed two persons standing there. They didn’t know each other, nor had they had any conversation at all (believe me, you don’t chat with strangers early in the morning unless there is an emergency, e.g the bus not coming). But instanly I knew who had been there first, as I always do. Only I never tought of it until now. The person who arrived first had a look of determination, a look which told the rest that this person is stepping aboard first. These “first-people” always do. Now, the second person stands slightly skew from the line that will form. This is to signal “I’m the second in-line!!!” (Yes, the signal is so hysterical it deserves three exclamation marks).

So, as the third person arrives it is custom to notify these silent signals and then stand properly behind the second person. But if you are confused some morning, or just brave, try standing on the wrong side of the queue. For this you will obtain the evil eye bye all who saw you preform this, very upsetting Swedish sin.

To compensate your poor fellow travellers, give them the puppy eye. Or just play stupid. Or you could even pretend you didn’t know of this Swedish custom, by calling someone you know and talk another language.

Det är roligt att prata om fördomar. För då vet man vad man kan göra för att förbättra kommunikationen mellan oss. Här har jag listat lite fördomar kineserna har om svenskar.

1. Sverige? Ja! Du menar det här landet som tillverkar klockor och choklad? Schweiz?
2. Mycket sexualitet, många nakna kvinnor/män…
3. Nobelkommittén är partisk och delar ju aldrig ut Nobelpris till kineser med kinesiskt medborgarskap!
4. Det är mörkt och kallt i Sverige. Till och med svenskarna flyr till soligare delar av världen på sina semestrar.

Svenskar
5. är vänliga men blyga, pratar ju knappt…
6. står gärna i kö.
7. gillar miljön, är hälsosamma och sportar mycket.
8. gifter sig aldrig, men skiljer sig alltid.
9. planerar mycket i förväg, gör ungefär samma sak varje dag och betalar ungefär samma fakturor varje månad.
10. är flitiga, seriösa men skrattar aldrig.
11. gör beslut med stora säkerhetsmarginaler och gillar framför allt säkerhetsbälte!

Förberedelserna inför den bästa EXPO någonsin pågår för fullt. Man vill ju visa upp det bästa av Shanghai för resten av världen. Men precis som inför OS i Peking är det svårt att undgå att prata om kommunikation och engelska kunskaper bland kineserna. På samma sätt som singlish(Singapore engelska), och ja, varför inte svengelska, har också kineserna lyckats kombinera engelska med sitt modersmål. Språket kallas pidgin-engelska, eller rent av missförstånd, pigeon-engelska. Här följer det ett exempel på hur det fungerar:

Engelska: Thank you very much!

Pidgin-engelska : 生发油抹来抹去，eller på pinyin: “sheng fa you mo lai mo qu”. Om man uttalar det här på shanghai-dialekten så kan man komma riktigt nära det engelska uttalet!

Såg denna skylt i närheten av Shanghai, kanske är det pidginengelska in action?

Detta “språk” utövades framförallt i Kanton, Hongkong , Shanghai och en del andra stora handelshamnar i Kina från 1700-talet till ungefär 1900. Sedan började fler och fler kineser lära sig den riktiga engelskan i skolan och pidgin-engelska tappade det mesta av sin marknad. Men än i dag kan man höra denna förenklade variant av engelskan i Shanghai. Det kanske är något att tänka på om du har dina vägar förbi Shanghai någon gång.

En annan kvarleva från tidigare visar hur man kunde addera två kulturer och forma en ny. Det är nämligen så att invånarna i Shanghai gärna går ut i nattkläder. Nattkläderna tillhörde den del av västerländsk kultur som kineserna tidigt lyckades snappa upp, då nattkläderna ursprungligen inte hörde hemma i den kinesiska garderoben. Under det fattiga 70- och 80-talet var det dock få som hade pengar över till ett par lyxiga nattplagg, så nattkläderna blev ett tecken på hur välbärgat man levde. Men Shanghais varma somrar och kalla vintrar gjorde det svårt för kineserna att verkligen använda dem i sängen, det blev att man började gå i dem på gatorna istället. Så formades den unika “nattkläder-kulturen” i Shanghai. Nu avråder EXPOs organisatör folk från att gå i nattkläder på gatorna för att det kan tolkas som “ociviliserat”. Vi får väl avvakta och se hur det hela slutar.

Du har kanske sett filmen Kung Fu Hustle? Det sägs att den här rollen har en viss koppling till “nattkläder-kulturen”…

This blog will be written in both English and Swedish, to attract both Swedish and international students. The theme of this year’s project is the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Besides following the work of the Swedish pavilion we will also post news from the Expo and our partner companies.

As students you will be able to acquaint yourselves with our partner companies and get a glimpse of their every day routine. You will also be able to read mini-interviews with Swedes in China and Chinese in Sweden. Furthermore you will be updated about rumors and gossips from the Far East and the North, mixed up with some fun comparisons between the Chinese and Swedish way of living.

Kvällen inleddes med välkomsttal av professor Torbjörn Lodén, som är föreståndare för Konfuciusinstitutet, samt Chen Mingming, som är ambassadör på Kinas ambassad i Sverige. Detta event var ett samarbete med Beijing Sport University, som hade många representanter under Olympiska spelen i Beijing 2008.

Det var några otroligt häftiga inslag. Några personliga höjdpunkter under den två-timmar långa föreställningen var dansen ”Grön påfågel” i minoritetfolket Dais anda samt alla wushu-framträdanden. De hade sådan kraft och spiritualitet i sina uppträdanden.

Till pappa, Hanna och Shuhan och alla som är födda i tigerns år: år 2010 är ert år! Glöm inte att ha på er något rött.
