Welcome to Project China 2009!

With its vast cultural heritage and ancient history, combined with the raging pace of economic and technical development, China has become one of the most interesting and complex countries today. Having spectacularly arranged the summer Olympic Games 2008 and being the host of World Expo 2010 next year, China is in the centre of attention more than ever.

Project China was established in 2003 as a joint student project between Stockholm School of Economics and the Royal Institute of Technology with the purpose to discover more about the development of modern China and encourage further collaboration between Sweden and China, for students as well as businesses. This is the seventh consecutive year of the project, which has grown to become the largest student project with international focus in Sweden.

This year Project China constitutes of eleven students from the Stockholm School of Economics and the Royal Institute of Technology. The main objective of this year’s project is to create opportunities where students and companies can interact in China and Sweden as well as to further encourage and stimulate the interest for the two countries. During the year, a wide range of activities are arranged for students in China and in Sweden

CHINA WEEK 28/9 – 2/10 at the Stockholm School of Economics and the Royal Institute of Technology

China Week is arranged during week 40 (28/9 – 2/10) at the Stockholm School of Economics and the Royal Institute of Technology. The week commences with the release of the Report Book, 31 Days of watching China Change, and the release of our short documentary film. The short documentary film is primarily based on our impressions from our 31 days long study trip to China this summer.

During the rest of the week, interesting lunch lectures about current Sino-related topics as well as inspiring activities are going to be held. Afternoon and evening activities with a cultural touch such as a table tennis tournament and screening of Chinese films are also going to be arranged.

The highlight of China week is China Day, a combined cultural and career expo that is going to take place on Friday 2/10. During the expo, visitors will have the opportunity to mingle with Swedish enterprises with businesses in China, enjoy a photo exhibition of contemporary China, taste crazy Chinese food in Chinese fear factor, try out Chinese sumo-wrestling in special costumes, participate in humorous contests with the chance to win nice prices and a lot of other amusing activities.

THE REPORT BOOK - 31 days of watching China change

A large part of Project China is made up by research that is compiled into a report book, which will be published in the beginning of China Week. The theme for this year’s report is the global financial crisis’s effects on China, with focus on three different aspects: the economy, the environment and the everyday life. Could this financial crisis result in the beginning of a new world order? How has the concern for the environment among Chinese students been affected by the crisis? And has the financial crisis affected cross-cultural marriages in China? These are some of the questions that will be answered in 31 Days of Watching China Change.

SWEDEN DAY 7/6 at Tsinghua University in Beijing

Sweden Day, a combined cultural and career expo, was arranged at China’s top rated university, Tsinghua University in Beijing. The expo was divided into three parts: Swedish culture, study in Sweden and work in Sweden. During the day, visitors had the opportunities to go to interesting lunch lectures about what it is like to study and work in Sweden, participate in funny competitions with the chance to win nice prices, mingle with Swedish companies, try out traditional Swedish food and a lot of other entertaining activities. Sweden Day was inaugurated by Mikael Lindström, the Swedish ambassador to China, and the expo was visited by about 3000 students as well as a TV-team from the Chinese television CCTV-9!

A series of exciting evening seminars were arranged at Tsinghua University during the spring to promote Sweden and Sweden Day. During the autumn, our goldpartner, Sandvik, is going to hold a presentation at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

THE STUDY TRIP 29/5 – 28/6 Beijing – Qingdao – Shanghai – Shenzhen – Hong Kong

The project group spent 31 days in China during the summer, partly to arrange the Sweden-promotional activity Sweden Day and partly to do research for the Report Book. The trip started in Beijing, the political and cultural centre of China, where Sweden Day was arranged. The next stop was the coastal city Qingdao, which has undergone a tremendous development the past few decades. The third stop of the trip was Shanghai, the centre of commerce and finance in mainland China, where a discussion forum at Fudan University was arranged among other activities. After Shanghai, we went to Shenzhen, where we visited several factories. The last stop of our journey was the former British colony, Hong Kong, which has been a special part of China since 1997. During the 31 days we spent in China, we documented our impressions and experiences in our blog and videoblog.
